Welcome to Farmington Valley Arts Center's Summer Teen Art Afternoons Program. Teen artists will explore the arts more deeply with the guidance of professional artists.

iPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY

Find beauty in simple objects around us and learn to capture high-quality photos with your iPhone (or borrow one of our iPads). Professional photographer Andy Mars will share tips on photo composition, introduce you to her favorite creative photo apps, and show you how to turn your photos from bland to grand! Additionally, you will explore different artistic techniques of combining photographs with pastel chalk, pencils, and other drawing materials to create unique hand-colored and stunning mixed-media artworks!

MIXED MEDIA EXPLORATION

Join us for a fun class focused on mixed media exploration using a variety of art materials including watercolor, gouache, acrylic, collage, and many other drawing and painting materials! Students will create all kinds of two-dimensional art from realistic to imaginative to abstract using mixed media materials.

Put your design skills to the test in a fun environment learning a variety of art-making skills. Students will work with different media like paper, glass, textiles, plaster, paints, found objects to create their own handmade artwork like beautiful books, glass mosaics, embroidery, and much more.

Come experience the rewarding process of working with clay and creating unique pieces! Learn the fundamentals like hand-building techniques of pinch, coil, and slab. Then have a seat at the potter's wheel and explore a variety of wheel throwing practices.

Drawing & Painting - Portraiture in Paint and Fiber

August 14-18, 2023

Paint a selfie! Draw inspiration from famous artists throughout history and explore various methods to create your own unique portrait. Teens will learn to draw facial features while practicing portraiture using a variety of fun techniques!

Meet The Insructors

Andy Mars

Andy Mars is a freelance photographer, photo artist & instructor. She photographs events (formerly specialized in weddings), people, and pets. She is a photography instructor teaching classes & workshops in digital photography, iPhoneography, mixed media photography and computer file organization & workflow. Her work has been exhibited at the Memorial Arts Museum in Rochester, NY, Manhattan and CT galleries and various Soho Gallery restaurants. Visit  Andy's website.

Kristy Lankford

Kristy Lankford is an experienced artist, illustrator, and art teacher. After attending Boston College for studio art and the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she received a Master's of Fine Arts in illustration, Kristy began her teaching career at a small arts college in the Washington D.C. area. Kristy has taught in public and private schools for the past 13 years in Virginia and will continue teaching art in Granby, CT, this fall. She maintains an active fine art and illustration career. Her favorite materials are watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and a little bit of digital painting. If she's not making her art, you can find her exploring the Farmington Valley, where she has recently relocated, with her husband and two kids. Visit Kristy's website.

Stefanie Baechler

Stefanie Baechler graduated from CCSU with a bachelor's degree in art education and English as a Second Language. During the school year, Stefanie teaches art to 3rd through 6th graders in the Winchester Public school district. Since her college years, Stefanie has been teaching youth art classes, leading art adventure programs, and instructing art parties at the Farmington Valley Arts Center. Her work focuses on capturing fleeting and spontaneous emotions through colorful abstract figures and paintings.

Ally Pedemonti

Ally Pedemonti is an artist and art educator living and working in Connecticut. She graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a B.S. in Art Education and completed a residency at the Farmington Valley Arts Center in the summer of 2019. From 2016 to 2023, Ally has been accepted into several juried group shows in Connecticut.
