Class Description

This is a step-by-step tutorial on materials, techniques, brushwork, and color-mixing with acrylic paint. The course covers the basics of composition, an introduction to various acrylic painting styles, and culminates with developing your unique creative process.
The instructor will lead the group through the process of creating 4 paintings, step-by-step, from start to finish. The instructor will demonstrate techniques and provide guidance throughout the class, with individualized attention for students. The final painting will be a self-directed exploration of combining the techniques learned in class.

Learning Objectives:
• Introduction to paint brands, types and pigments
• Introduction to brushes, palette knives, and texture tools
• Basic color theory and mixing principles
• Blending, layering, glazing, dry brushing, stippling, impasto and conventional textures
• Contemporary texture and layering techniques
• Brush control and brush strokes
• Mediums and additives, gels, pastes and varnishes
• Troubleshooting and problem solving with common acrylic painting issues
• Care and maintenance of brushes, palettes, and tools
• Identifying techniques used in contemporary work
• An exploration of various painting styles including realism, impressionism, abstractionism and superflat
• Begin the process of developing your own creative process

About the Instructor

Janet Galvin is a dedicated course instructor, teaching youth classes at the Farmington Valley Arts Center and continuing education classes at the Boston School of Fashion Design. She is experienced in curriculum planning, class instruction, and effective tutoring for the adult learner. Janet received a B.A. in Art in 2018, began her professional career as an artist in residence at FVAC. Janet is known for her acrylic paintings which incorporate color harmonies and textures inspired by nature.
