Class Description

Join us for five creative Monday afternoons and learn the characteristics of a vibrant still life, put up by the instructor. This may include some of the following elements: fabric, glass, metal, fruit, and or flowers. Karen will discuss still life composition, setup, and lighting, followed by a quick demo addressing students' questions and concerns. Learn a variety of techniques to create your fresh and dynamic still life painting.


Materials
• A variety of pastels in primary, secondary and tertiary colors and values and greys, hard and soft
• Sanded pastel paper, such as UART no larger than 16x20 or unsanded pastel paper such as Canson Mi-Teintes
• A board to tape paper onto
• Artists’ tape
• Vine charcoal or pastel pencil for line drawing the objects
• Paper towels
• Terry towel for under easel
• Apron
• Optional: rubbing alcohol, 1” brush, 1” flat brush, watercolor paint, watercolor brush


About the Instructor

Karen Israel is an award winning pastel artist. Her paintings are created as a celebration of light and color that aim to delight the eye and engage the mind. Karen’s paintings are representational but symbolism and abstraction are constantly emerging in the frame. Her work can be found in many collections throughout the Northeast and Canada.
Among her many awards, in 2020, she placed Fourth in Pastel Journal Magazine’s top 100 juried competition; in 2012 and in 2014, Third Place in the top 100 and she received an Honorable Mention in this same competition in 2018. She was recently designated the honor of Maxima Cum lade with the American Artists Professional League.Visit Karen's website.
