Sarah Schwartz

Sarah began making art when she was a child. Encouraged from a young age, she continues to find courage, strength, and connection through creative expression. Sarah earned a BFA in Painting, Photography, and Art History 2006 at FSU in Maryland. It was here that she first realized that making art was a therapeutic process— and continues to view art making through this lens.
For more than a decade, Sarah has enjoyed deepening her art practice by teaching art to various populations. She now focuses primarily on making her own work as well as teaching yoga and private art lessons. Sarah integrates the practices of art and yoga movement by learning how to value listening to the body’s wisdom. Most of the artwork she currently creates is a process of tuning in to what’s present while letting go of expectations.
Sarah enjoys exploring the creative process through the media of paint, clay, metal, photography, and installation. Each material and tool becomes a way—a means to reconnect, reflect, and in turn, express through the collaboration with these media.
Current themes that emerge from these processes are excavations of embodied memory, the perfection in imperfection (the Japanese philosophy of “wabi sabi”), the beauty in brokenness (the Japanese philosophy of “kintsukuroi”), and exploring edges.
Farmington Valley Arts Center provides a quiet space to explore the internal world. Sarah found her way to FVAC through a series of serendipitous occurrences, opening the way for her to become an Artist in Residence in 2018, and a studio artist since. You will find her (and her indoor garden) in Studio 9B.
