Class Description
In this course, you will learn how to use digital programs as tools for drawing, painting, cartoons and comics, and mixed media. You will also be given the tips and tricks needed to expand your learning far beyond the duration of the class. Demonstrations of digital drawing will be given throughout the course.
This class will primarily focus on Adobe Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint, but lessons can be adjusted and adapted to other similar programs, such as Autodesk Sketchbook, Krita, and Procreate.
A drawing tablet, touchscreen device, or computer with stylus support is highly recommended, though not required. Students should have at least one digital drawing program installed - Photoshop and Clip Studio are both strong options, but there are also excellent free alternatives like Krita and Sketchbook, or Procreate.
Materials
- A computer or tablet with the capacity to download a drawing program
- A touchscreen tablet or computer (recommended)
- A digital stylus or combination drawing tablet and stylus (recommended)

About the Instructor
Rowan Collins is a digital illustrator and animator who creates character art for clients, and who creates comics, animations, and artwork for both their own characters, and as fan art. They've been practicing digital art for a decade and graduated from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with a BA in Art in 2023. They regularly share their commissioned character artwork on Instagram, Reddit, and Tumblr. Their animated concept film, "A Meadowsweet Morning," was shown at the Regis Center for the Arts in the exhibition "Reaching Past." Collins draws inspiration from games, both digital and at the tabletop, and from a combination of natural sciences and magical practice.
