Adult Classes at a Glance

Monday

Photo Composition with Andy Mars
What makes a successful photograph? You will learn some photographic tips so your friends and family will say "wow, did you take that photo"! You can go outside the box but also follow some "rules": simplify the scene, fill the frame, and change the aspect ratio (using photo software such as Photoshop or iPhone apps you have many options; for example, you use 1:1 for Instagram for creating a square image)....and many more to learn. Most important is to have fun learning something new!
To get the most out of the session, participants should bring a digital camera, smartphone or tablet capable of taking pictures and their creativity. (Minimum 5 and maximum 10)

Acrylic/Oil Painting with Zbigniew Grzyb
In this course students will learn about using acrylic/oil paint. We will use acrylics/oil in different ways and explore the flexibility of the medium. Students will have freedom to experiment with different styles and to create their own original artwork. A material list will be provided.

Watercolor Techniques with Zbigniew Grzyb
A course designed for the beginner or advanced artist consisting of a series of exercises enabling the student to gain a solid foundation in watercolors. Subjects and exercises to include color, still life, and landscapes. The student's personal creativity and growth will be encouraged. A material list will be provided.

Silk Screening with Lindsay Behrens
Learn the basics of silk screening with stencil, reduction with screen filler, and the drawing fluid techniques. This method of printmaking is very versatile, in that once you have your image created, you can print multiple copies of it on practically anything including paper, vinyl, wood, or clothing, as well as in combination with other mediums! You will also come away with a clearer vision and understanding of composition. Material fee: $40 paid to the instructor the first day of class.

WATER MEDIA! Painting Basics for Everybody with Carolann Dvorak-Brewer
This is the class for EVERYBODY who's ever wanted to paint, EVERYBODY who used to paint, EVERYBODY who likes to paint now, and EVERYBODY else too. Learn to use watercolor, acrylic, and water-soluble oil paints, and decide which one is for you. Concepts such as shading, color mixing, subject selection, and composition will be demystified. Blockprinting with Jim Brunelle
Explore the ancient technique of block printing. In this class you will learn how to carve and print by hand from rubber and linoleum blocks, following the traditional form of printmaking. By the end of the session, participants will have garnered the basic tools and resources to continue exploring and making prints at home. No experience necessary; this class is particularly geared towards those who would not necessarily consider themselves artists, but want to learn a new skill and be surprised by how they can make beautiful art. Bring a sketch, printout, or example of your design. You can use something you have drawn, found online, or another printed item. Material fee: $20 paid to the instructor the first day of class. Intro to Wire Work Jewelry with Lisa Pichnarcik
Make several beautiful pieces of jewelry as you learn a variety of wire wrapping and wirework techniques. A new skill will be introduced each week as students progress from basic wire wrapping techniques to more advanced skills that include forging your own unique designs. Students should bring the following tools with them to class: chain nose pliers, round nose pliers, side or flush cutters, and safety glasses. Material fee: $20 paid to the instructor the first day of class.

Monotypes and Mixed Media Collage with Jim Brunelle
Create ‘painterly prints’ from working in watercolor on smooth acrylic plates. Participants may elect to compose landscapes, portraits or abstract pieces of many sizes with endless possibilities. Plates are hand pressed to transfer paintings to paper creating the ‘Monotype.’ Students will also create collage prints on paper with monotype plates using chine-collé technique, roughly translates from French chine = tissue, and collé, meaning glue or paste to complete collage pieces.

Drawing or Painting the Still Life with Paul Gobell
Learn the fundamentals of drawing or painting what you see. Using study of still life, this class examines the principles of composition, form, scale, proportion, perspective color and value. Still life is the art of drawing an arrangement of objects, often including flowers and fruit and objects contrasting with these in texture, such as bowls and glassware. Still life art lessons are ideal to discover and practice the basic skills of drawing and painting. Take the skills that you from demonstrations and apply them to all subject in artwork! Tailoring the instruction for independent exercises to meet the needs of each individual, this class is appropriate for all levels of experience. The first class will be an overview of the course and a discussion about the differences between oil and acrylic paints, and will include drawing exercises. Figure Drawing with Paul Iezzi
Learn to draw the human figure using a variety of media including charcoal, pastels, ink, and pencil. Hone or find your ability to "see" through an artist's eye working with a new live model each week. Personal growth and self-expression are developed through this beginner-friendly series of classes focused on lessons such as gesture, contour, and proportion. Live model fee $45* per student payable to the instructor.

Select a project that inspires you, and represent it in drawing and painting. Bring an object, photo, or other inspiration to the first class. Discover ways to apply a multitude of techniques for various projects and take home a selection of masterpieces! (Minimum 5 and maximum 10)

The Dynamic Portrait in Pastel with Karen Israel
Develop a dynamic lifelike portrait with painting in Pastels. Demonstrations include explanations of pastel portrait techniques for creating accurate likeness, establishing clear values, evaluating color relationships, selecting skin tones, and harnessing the power of strong design. Techniques necessary to create likeness and a stunning portrait. Discussion of lighting, posing and photographing the model for reference and the pitfalls of photo reference will be reviewed. Students will work from the live model or photo, creating an exploratory thumbnail study with attention to composition. Learn how to apply a direct pastel method by beginning with an under-painting to create vibrant skin tones. Each session includes an encouraging group critique.

Drawing and Painting with Soft and Oil Pastels with Zbigniew Grzyb
A class offering more than 40 step-by-step sequences that show how to master pastel painting to develop your own individual style. The projects show the whole process of picture making from planning to completion. A series of sessions covering the full range of techniques and skills using soft pastels. Materials list provided at registration.

Painting Nature with Wet Felting with Elena Gibson
Discover the ancient art of wet felting. Choose seasonal palette, layout wool to capture your vision of nature and learn how to make a cohesive sheet of felt as a composed painting. Add details and embellishment using special barbed needle. Bring an image as inspiration and reference. This is beginner friendly class. Bring a 2 towels.

Painting Basics with Paul Iezzi
A course designed for the beginner to the advanced painter. Students wishing to work in Acrylic, Watercolor or Pastel are welcome. The basics of painting including: color mixing, paint application, drawing, and composition, will be addressed in this course. Subject matter will include landscape, still life, and portraiture. Students are encouraged to express creativity and personal vision. A material list will be provided.

Silk Scarf and Handkerchief Marbling with Elena Gibson
Explore the centuries-old technique of Japanese marbling, Suminagashi. Participants will learn how to use this method to decorate a silk handkerchief and scarf with intricate swirling patterns. Prior to the initial decorating, participants will have the opportunity to choose their colors and do some experimenting on silk scraps. In addition to being wearable art, the resulting prints can be used for quilting, book-binding, or wall art. Material fee includes 1 silk scarf, 2 hankies and silk fabric scraps to practice on.
Bring an apron or other protective clothing, the mess is part of the fun!

Monday

Introduction to Nature Drawing and Painting with Susan Prentice (suggested ages 12-16)
Learn to see shapes in nature and animals. Birds, Bugs, Bees, Flowers and Trees all have an infinite array to inspire how a young creative genius will compose. Students have the ability to express ideas through many visual perspectives in the classroom and around the FVAC campus.

Reader’s Theater: Ready, Set, Action with Lisa Pichnarcik (suggested ages 8-14)
Students will experience theater first-hand by developing their own production using a technique called Reader’s Theater. Children will read aloud and act out a variety of plays each week, from comedies to folk tales to mysteries. Students will enhance their presentation skills each week with fun “warm up” exercises, including miming, sound effects, games, tongue twisters, joke telling, and mini-skits. The class will also work together to create props, costumes, accessories, and sets.

Hand-building Clay Animals and Objects with Jim Brunelle (suggested ages 7-12)
FVAC is excited to introduce raw clay to young students with projects that will be fired and glazed for the entire ceramic sculpture experience! Working from slabs, coils and additive sculpting techniques students will learn to create animals and primitive objects for life long lasting results. Six weeks of working with wet clay and two sessions devoted to glazing and painting ceramic pieces. $15 materials fee payable to the instructor.

iPHONEOGRAPHY: CREATIVE iPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY
with Andy Mars (suggested ages 10-15)
With today’s devices all having cameras and some “AWESOME” apps, anyone can take pictures. This session will introduce kids to some photography basics, composition tips, and easily accessible photography apps that can be used to edit your shots and “AWESOMIZE” them. To get the most out of the session, participants should bring a device capable of taking pictures and their creativity. Workshop will include instructional content as well as hands-on components.
Requirements: Students are required to have either an iPhone 5/5S, 6 or 6+ iOS 7 or 8 (or iPad) as well as an active iTunes account. Instructor will have you download the free editing app Snapseed.

Mixed Media Collage with Deborah Velasquez (suggested ages 6-12)
Using a variety of materials including string, beads, fabric, paint, ink, etc. young students will explore the creative process by assembling artwork that will reflect their individuality. Students will learn about line, shape, color form and balance, and will have the added pleasure working with ordinary materials to MAKE ART HAPPEN. $15 materials fee payable to the instructor.

Fiber Art with Elena Gibson (suggested ages 9-15)
Explore what it takes to be a fiber artist and designer! In this series of fun-filled afternoon classes students will explore a variety of techniques and media. Projects will include paper manipulating, printmaking, felting, sewing, weaving and much more. Each class will include a weekly inspiration drawn from a diverse range of artists and cultures. $15 materials fee payable to the instructor.

Mask Making with Dorota Rzepecki (ages 6-12)
This fun and original workshop will give kids the opportunity to exercise their creativity as they delve into the fabulous world of mask making. Over the course the kids will design, build and decorate their own detailed mask, starting with a simple paper masks proceeding to the mask molded with wire and plaster, all while learning about the history of mask making, the variety of material used and the uses for masks in history and various cultures around the world. $15 materials fee payable to the instructor.
